The objectives of the ASEAN University Games, also known as the AUG, are:
To promote ASEAN Solidarity in our youth through school sports;
To provide opportunities for University athletes to benchmark their sporting talents in the ASEAN region; and
To provide opportunities for University athletes to interact and engage in cultural exchange within ASEAN.
The games include universities from the countries who are part of the ASEAN community; and include Brunei, Cambodia,Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
The ASEAN University Games started in 1981 and was hosted in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Indonesia emerged as champion in the AUG and the games has been dominated by Indonesia since then, who have clinched the title ten times since its inception, showcasing their powerhouse status in university sports.Since the beginning of the games, the number of participants as well as the number of sports has also increased, providing a platform for university students in the ASEAN countries to compete against one another.
The 19th AUG will be held in Nay Pyi Taw , Myanmar on 10-19 December 2018. This is the sporting scene Myanmar will see for the first time. We are honored to host the 19th AUG 2018 in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital city of Myanmar. It is the fruitful result of the combined efforts of Myanmar universities that Myanmar can host the 19th AUG 2018. The Ministry of Education is also working closely with the Ministry of Health and Sports as well as other line ministries for the successful celebration of this first and foremost event in Myanmar.
